My preferred Halloween theme has — and will forever be — ravens. They’ve been the foundation of my decor for as long as I can remember. I just find it blends in beautifully with my soft autumn decor. But this year, my son, now eight, asked to add a little spook… skeletons, to be exact.
And so, challenge accepted… but make it Emm (wink).
We came up with a storyline that fit both our worlds: a haunted garden. A way to bring my beloved ravens together with his newfound love of skeletons.
Foraged branches, burgundy mums in aged galvanized pots, and my actual ivy — planted last spring — spilling over terracotta pots. Nature is oh so chic! Especially paired with a ton of pumpkins in shades of grey-ish sage and peachy marbled tones, freshly selected at the pumpkin patch.
Together, it already looked beautiful. But here’s my Halloween twist:
Moss. All. Over. The. Place.
Tucked around pumpkins, spilling down the steps, creeping over lanterns and winding its way through skeleton bones. The more imperfect and overgrown it looked, the better.
Then I just needed to add my birds, an old black feathered wreath and a few lanterns, and suddenly the house became gothic botanical — a true haunted garden that still feels moody, chic and classic Halloween.
And my favourite little corner? That little skeleton in the white planter with the giant burgundy flowers. I LOVE THAT. The flowers across the lap, moss, positioning, everything. It was styled entirely by my eight-year-old, who apparently understood the assignment.
